beginning in verse 7 (rather than, as the NAB renders it, beginning a new paragraph). Paul concludes that through his sufferings the Corinthians benefit. How? At an obvious level, the community benefits from his commitment to actively enter into the dynamic of Christ’s self-giving love for them, a commitment that makes him their “slave” (4:5). But Paul also speaks at a deeper level. Because he aligns his suffering with Jesus’ redemptive suffering, his suffering has redemptive value for the Corinthians.
